Abstract

Flow failure of geomaterials is characterized by a sudden loss of strength and a rapid development of deformation, and is often accompanied by a quick build-up of pore water pressure. It is essentially an instability behavior and can be triggered by either static or dynamic loading. The consequences of this type of failure are often dramatic and catastrophic to our built and natural environment. Typical examples are the massive flow slides of tailings dams, hydraulic fills and submarine slopes. While some aspects of flow failure have been well understood through experimental and theoretical studies over the years, many others, however, remain confusing, controversial or mysterious. This Lecture will first give an overview of the subject, with particular attention on the aspects that confuse researchers and practising engineers. Recent advances in understanding flow failure and related phenomena and the implications for geotechnical engineering practice will then be presented and discussed.

About the Lecturer

Dr Jun Yang is a full professor at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and currently serves as associate head of the Department of Civil Engineering. His research spans a broad spectrum of topics in geotechnical and earthquake engineering, with particular interest in exploring the complex behavior of geomaterials from experimental, theoretical and practical perspectives. He has published extensively in leading journals in his fields, and has been named by Clarivate Analytics among the world’s top 1% scholars by citations. His work has also been referenced in two design guidelines in the US. Professor Yang is an elected Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK, and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Other notable honors include the Humboldt Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Invitation Fellowship of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Natural Science Award (First Class) from Chinese Ministry of Education, and the Outstanding Overseas Chinese Scholars Award from the National Science Foundation of China.
