报告摘要
In this talk, I will present our work on the microscale behavior of unsaturated granular materials, with a particular focus on how capillary effects influence grain interactions across the different saturation regimes—namely the pendular, funicular, and capillary regimes. While the pendular regime is already relatively well described in the literature, the funicular and capillary regimes remain less explored and are still not well understood. In fact, many existing models struggle to reproduce realistic unsaturated conditions, especially in the funicular regime, where the liquid phase forms complex and evolving networks between grains. To address this limitation, we developed a coupled numerical framework combining the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to model grain contact mechanics with the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) to simulate fluid behavior. This DEM-LBM approach allows us to explicitly capture both capillary bridge evolution and particle kinematics at the microscale. Our results demonstrate that these microscale interactions play a crucial role in governing the macroscopic mechanical response of unsaturated granular materials. By investigating these mechanisms, our work contributes to more accurate multiscale modeling strategies and helps improve constitutive modeling of unsaturated granular materials.
主讲人简介
Olivier MILLET is Professor at La Rochelle University, attached to the CNRS Lab LaSIE. His main areas of research are homogenization in porous media and transfer properties in cementitious materials, multi-scale approaches in solid mechanics and geomechanics, micromechanical analysis of dry and partially saturated granular materials, and modeling of thin structures. He is director of the international research network (IRN) GeoMech “Multiphysics and multiscale couplings in geo-environmental mechanics” since 2016. He was a member of the Comité national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) from 2016 to 2021, responsible for three microgravity parabolic flight campaigns with the Centre national d'études spatiales (CNES) on the theme “Study of capillary bridges in microgravity”, and scientific leader of several national and regional scientific projects. He has published over 100 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and is author or co-author of 3 books.
